Grzegorz Braun, a member of the far-right Konfederacja Party, extinguished the candles lit in the Polish parliament for the Jewish Hanukkah holiday by using a fire extinguisher. Following the incident, his immunity was lifted through a vote held in the parliament. The lifting of his immunity paved the way for him to be tried for his recent action and seven other crimes, including “damage to property” and “insulting religious symbols and feelings,” which the prosecutor’s office has brought against him in 2022 and 2023.
Braun was expelled from the general assembly after extinguishing the candles on the seven-branched candelabra lit in the parliament for the Jewish Hanukkah holiday on December 12 of last year.
