Polish PM lays blame on EU of blackmail as dispute over rule of law soars

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had a dispute over “Rule of Law” during their speech in European Parliament following Leyen’s critism over Polish Constitutional Tribunal’s decision that “national laws are superior to European Union (EU) laws”. Leyen said, “EU commission is at the moment is carefully assessing this judgement, but I can tell you already today that I am deeply concerned,” adding that “We cannot and we will not allow our common values to be put at risk. The Commission will act. And the options are all known.”

In response Polish Pm Morawiecki rejected “the language of threats” and accused EU politicians of blackmailing Poland, saying “Blackmail must not be a method of policy,”. He stated that the Polish court ruling on October 7th was misunderstood and only called into question one aspect of EU treaties, and that EU treaties must not jeopardize a member state’s constitution, which outlines the laws and principles that govern a country.
