Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church, died at age 88 in his Vatican residence, the Holy See announced. Cardinal Kevin Farrell said the Pope passed away peacefully at 07:35 local time and praised his life of service and compassion.
Francis had recently addressed the faithful from a wheelchair during Easter Mass, urging a ceasefire in Gaza. He was discharged from hospital last month after treatment for respiratory failure.
Known for his humble lifestyle, Francis requested a simple funeral and will be buried at Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore — the first pope in over a century to be laid to rest outside the Vatican.
