Portugal Forest Fires Kill 7

Seven people have died and 40 others, including 33 firefighters, have been injured as forest fires rage across three locations in Portugal’s Aveiro region. The fires, which have destroyed 10,000 hectares of land, intensified over the weekend. Among the victims is a 28-year-old Brazilian working in forestry who died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Over 3,700 firefighters, 1,000 vehicles, and 20 aircraft are battling the flames. Portugal has activated the EU’s civil protection mechanism, receiving firefighting planes from Spain, with more support expected from France, Italy, and Greece.

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro warned that the situation could worsen in the coming days, canceling all his meetings to focus on the crisis.
