Protests in Kazakhstan, which started after the government hiked liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, continue despite the government’s resignation. Angry protesters in Taldykorgan tried to topple the statue of the country’s first President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who tried to appease the protesters, announced in a televised speech that he had taken over the Presidency of the National Security Council from former leader Nursultan Nazarbayev.
As the protests intensified yesterday, a state of emergency was declared in the country. It was announced that more than 200 people were detained in the protests in Almaty, where tear gas was used against those protesting the hike in fuel prices yesterday.
