Tensions have escalated across the country after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on corruption charges in Pakistan. Khan supporters in the city of Lahore have called for protests over Khan’s arrest in a bribery-related case. Upon the call, supporters of Imran Khan took to the streets to protest the arrest decision. It was reported that 20 people were detained during the protests.
Pakistan has repatriated over 13,500 Afghan nationals since April 1, following a government order targeting undocumented migrants and Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) holders.
Thousands returned through the Torkham border in the northwest, departing in buses and trucks. The deadline for ACC holders to leave was extended to April 10 due to the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Pakistan hosts around 3 million Afghans, including 1.3 million with refugee status. Tensions between the two countries have grown since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
