Restored Roman Armor to be Exhibited in Türkiye

A 500-year-old Roman legionnaire armor, discovered in the ancient city of Satala in Gümüşhane, Türkiye, will now be exhibited where it was first found. The Lorica Squamata model armor, dating back to the Late Roman Period, underwent meticulous restoration over three years at the Erzurum Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory.

The armor, the only known example of its kind, was unearthed in 2020 and preserved with its original soil during the documentation phase. Using advanced X-ray and micro-CT imaging, experts restored and reassembled the armor to its original form. After a brief display at the Erzurum Culture Road Festival, the piece has been returned to Gümüşhane for permanent exhibition.
