A homestead next to the Padma River in the Munshiganj district of Bangladesh was driven away due to erosion. The residents of a village in Musnhiganj were afraid of the river because it had been devouring homesteads and croplands since the monsoon season started.
“Parts of this village have been eroded to such an extent that we cannot even imagine. There were 150 houses. We, 150 families, are in different places. I can’t find who went where with their houses (following river erosion). This is the river where my house was located. I reared ducks, roosters, cows, pigeons, and goats. I had a milk cow. My house was broken. I had three double-tin houses. It was beautiful. The river has taken everything. Now I’m a street beggar. I relocated my broken houses to an empty space. Now I don’t know how to start anew.” says Ali Miah Sayal, a villager from Sodha Kandi village.
The Bangladesh Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) stated that at least 17 areas in 12 districts might be drowned by the rivers of Padma, Meghna and Jamuna in this season.
