Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has resigned amid mounting pressure from opposition parties, stepping down before a scheduled parliamentary vote on his removal. Iohannis, who has been in office since 2014, announced he would leave on February 12, dismissing the opposition’s move as meaningless since his term was set to end soon.

As per the constitution, Senate President Illie Bolojan will temporarily assume the presidency. Romania’s presidential re-election is set for May 4, with a potential runoff on May 18.
