Romania’s Top Court Upholds Ban on Far-Right Candidate

Romania’s Constitutional Court has upheld a ban preventing far-right presidential candidate Calin Georgescu from running in the May elections, sparking protests in Bucharest. Georgescu, accused of being pro-Russian, was previously disqualified by the Central Election Committee for actions deemed contrary to presidential values.

Hundreds gathered outside the courthouse chanting slogans, while security forces increased measures. Georgescu called the ruling a blow to democracy, urging his supporters to remain steadfast. Far-right leader George Simion condemned the decision, while pro-EU politician Elena Lasconi supported it, calling for further action against Georgescu.

The controversy follows the annulment of the November 2024 election, where Georgescu led with 23% of the vote. Authorities cited Russian influence in the decision. The Romanian presidential elections are set for May 4, with a possible runoff on May 18.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi warned of “serious” damage to Iran’s Fordow uranium enrichment facility after recent US airstrikes, citing the sensitivity of centrifuges to shock and vibration.

In an emergency board meeting, Grossi said multiple structures tied to uranium processing at Isfahan and Natanz were also hit. He stressed that no full assessment of underground damage is yet possible.

Grossi condemned attacks on nuclear facilities as a global risk, urging restraint and a return to diplomacy. “We must resume negotiations to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” he said, expressing readiness to visit Iran.

He also confirmed Iran’s notification of new protective measures for nuclear materials, emphasizing they must comply with international safeguards.
