Russia and Ukraine carried out a new prisoner exchange under the July 23 Istanbul agreement. Both sides exchanged 185 soldiers and 20 civilians each.
Moscow said its returnees were taken to Belarus for medical and psychological care before being sent to Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the swap, noting that many of those freed had been held since 2022 in Mariupol, Azovstal, and Chernobyl. He said over 7,000 Ukrainians have been brought home since the war began.
