Russian hacker group “REvil” brought down by an operation

In July last year, US President Joe Biden was demanded the international Russian hacker group “REvil” activities to be stopped, in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. With the request of the US, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB RF) took action and carried out busts to 25 addresses belonging to 14 members of the group in the Moscow, St.Petersburg cities and Moscow, Leningrad and Lipetsk regions. FSB RF announced on Friday that over 426 million rubles, 600.000 dollars, 500.000 euros, as well as computer and hardware parts, crypto money wallets used to commit crimes, 20 luxury cars purchased with the money obtained from the crime were seized in the busts.

“As a result of the joint actions of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the organized criminal community ceased to exist, the information infrastructure used for criminal purposes was neutralized. Representatives of the competent US authorities were informed about the results of the operation,” FSB RF said.

Meanwhile, a source familiar with the REvil case told the Russian media that members of the group with Russian citizenship will not be handed over to the US.

On the other hand, in November last year, US put the leader of the hacker group Yevgeniy Polyanin on the wanted list, and announced that it would reward up to 10 million dollars for key information about the REvil group.
