Russian Police Detains 100 Navalny Supporters in Protests

After Alexei Navalny, known as the toughest opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died in the prison where he was detained yesterday, his supporters took to the streets with slogans of ‘Murderer Putin’. The police intervened in the groups because they were getting more and more crowded and detained some resisting demonstrators. More than 100 people, including 64 in St. Petersburg, where most of Navalny’s supporters live, were detained. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the protests were illegal.

Navalny, who had been investigating corruption cases involving Putin and his inner circle, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for charges of organizing protests for dissidents, committing illegal actions through the Anti-Corruption Foundation, making statements against Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin, and financing extremist actions.
