Sanae Takaichi Becomes Japan’s First Female Prime Minister

Sanae Takaichi, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has been elected prime minister, becoming the first woman in the nation’s history to hold the post.

Takaichi, 64, won 237 votes in the Lower House and later secured an absolute majority in the Upper House against opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda. Her appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba amid falling public support for the LDP.

After Komeito withdrew from the ruling coalition, Takaichi reached an agreement with the Japan Innovation Party to secure parliamentary backing. She is expected to form her new cabinet soon.
