US Senator Cory Booker delivered a 25-hour speech in the Senate, breaking the record for the longest speech to protest President Donald Trump. Booker, a Democrat, spoke from Monday evening until Tuesday night, delaying legislative proceedings.
During his speech, Booker criticized cuts to Social Security and warned of threats to American democracy. He read letters from affected constituents and reflected on his heritage as a descendant of both slaves and slave owners. The previous Senate speech record was held by Republican Senator Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours in 1957 against the Civil Rights Act.
