Serbia Battles Over 200 Forest Fires Amid Heatwave

Serbia is grappling with over 200 forest fires in the past 24 hours, leaving one person dead and 14 injured. Extreme heat and strong winds have worsened the situation, prompting a state of emergency in the southern town of Kursumlija and eastern Bor.

The Serbian Armed Forces joined firefighting efforts with helicopters and specialized equipment. In Bor, over 100 hectares of forest have burned, with support from local firms including Chinese-run Zijin Mining. Fires have also spread to farmland and homes in multiple regions including Gornji Milanovac, Kragujevac, and Nis.

Authorities shut down power lines in some areas to prevent further damage and urged citizens to avoid open flames and report any fire outbreaks immediately.
