A Nigerian child suffering from liver failure was given a second chance at life in Türkiye. Mercy Adesuwe Etemini, a 2-year-old from Nigeria, underwent a successful liver transplant in Antalya after being diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare condition where bile ducts are missing at birth.
The transplant was performed on May 15 by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Aliosmanoğlu at Medical Park Antalya Hospital using a piece of liver donated by her mother, Enoma Michelle Isoken. “This is where Mercy’s real chance came from,” said Isoken, who had launched an online appeal for help.
Dr. Aliosmanoğlu stated that Mercy’s case marked the hospital’s first baby patient from Africa and highlighted Türkiye’s growing role in international medical care. The child has now recovered and returned to Nigeria.
