Shehbaz Sharif becomes new PM of Pakistan after Imran Khan

Shehbaz Sharif became Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister after Prime Minister Imran Khan was dismissed after his government failed to receive a vote of confidence in the Pakistan National Assembly.

A vote of confidence was recently held in Pakistan’s National Assembly for Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government, and Khan was removed from office after his government failed to receive a vote of confidence. Following Khan’s dismissal, Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, was elected in a parliamentary vote today with 174 votes.

Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif’s older brother, served as Prime Minister of Pakistan three times before being removed in 2017 on corruption charges.

Parliamentarians from the party of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan resigned from the National Assembly en masse today.
