Slovakian PM Threatens Ukraine with Electricity

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said in a video released on the occasion of the New Year that Slovakia might stop supplying electricity to Ukraine if it stops the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

“If Kiev blocks the transit of Russian gas, we will evaluate the situation and the possibility of taking mutual measures against Ukraine after January 1. If necessary, we will stop the supply of electricity that Ukraine urgently needs or agree on another course of action,” he said.

According to the Slovak minister, stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine and Slovakia could estimately cost the European Union 120 billion euros in the next 2 years, and Slovakia would also suffer a loss of up to 500 million euros per year.

Ukraine, which refused to renew the Russian shipment agreement with Moscow that was due to expire at the end of the year because the war was ongoing, had announced that it would not allow Russian gas to pass through its territory as of January 1.
