Spain has officially recognized the State of Palestine, as announced by Government Spokesperson Pilar Alegria after a cabinet meeting. This decision, aimed at fostering peace between Israelis and Palestinians, was made in coordination with similar moves by Norway and Ireland.

On May 27, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin held a press conference at the Spanish Embassy in Brussels, confirming their countries’ intention to recognize Palestine. Following Spain’s cabinet meeting, Alegria declared, “The Spanish government has made an important decision to recognize the State of Palestine.”

Ireland and Norway followed suit, with Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris emphasizing the need to keep hope alive for a two-state solution. The Irish government also announced the establishment of full diplomatic relations with Palestine, including the appointment of an ambassador to Ramallah.

Palestinians celebrated the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas after indirect talks in Egypt, marking the first step of a broader peace plan involving hostage exchanges and Israeli troop withdrawals. Crowds, including children displaced by Israeli attacks, gathered around Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital to celebrate the end of the fighting. Residents in Maghazi Refugee Camp expressed hopes for rebuilding Gaza and establishing a Palestinian state. “Thank God, the war is over. Our homes were destroyed, and our children killed. We thank everyone who helped end this war,” said Yasser Abu Hein. Others shared optimism that Gaza would “return better than before.”

Israel confirmed that the ceasefire would begin following a cabinet vote later in the day.
