Spain to Officially Recognize Palestinian State

In a historic move, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced this morning that Spain will officially recognize Palestine. This decision, approved by the cabinet today, aims to support peace and justice in the region. The announcement followed a press conference at the Spanish Embassy in Brussels, attended by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin. The ministers confirmed their countries’ recognition of Palestine, marking a significant diplomatic shift.

Prime Minister Sanchez emphasized that recognizing Palestine is crucial for establishing peace alongside Israel. He stated, “Recognition of the Palestinian state is not only a matter of historical justice, but also essential for peace.” Sanchez stressed that Spain’s recognition does not imply hostility towards Israel and reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to strong relations with both nations.

The recognition aligns with the 1967 borders defined by the UN and EU, envisioning a united Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital. Sanchez reiterated Spain’s support for a two-state solution and continued collaboration with international partners for regional peace and prosperity.

Iran Warns Europe Over Nuclear Dispute

0

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi issued a stern warning to the UK, Germany, and France, accusing them of making a “new strategic mistake” regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. In a social media post, Arakchi said, “Iran will give a tough and determined response to the violation of its rights,” criticizing the European trio for backing a resolution against Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors.

Arakchi condemned the move as baseless, recalling past disputes in 2005 which led to the expansion of Iran’s uranium enrichment. “Have these three really not learned any lessons in the last twenty years?” he said.

Meanwhile, the IAEA reported on May 31 that Iran’s 60% enriched uranium stockpile had grown from 274.8 kg in February to 408.6 kg by May 17. In response, the UK, Germany, and France are reportedly preparing to refer Iran’s file to the UN Security Council, which could activate the “snapback” mechanism and reimpose UN sanctions.
