Stampede at football match in Indonesia killed 174, injured 180

A football match between the Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya teams that was played in the East Java state of Indonesia caused 174, including 2 police officers, to die and 180 to get injured. The fans of both teams entered the field as the match of the archrivals ended with Persebaya Surabaya winning the match. Police officers intervened in the stampede that broke out between the fans by using pepper spray.

Police Chief Nico Afinta stated the fans attacked police officers and damaged cars. There were 3,000 fans at the field and there were 42,000 who came to the watch in total.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered the suspension of all matches within the BRI Liga 1 league until the incident is investigated by the Football Association of Indonesia.
