At least 17 people lost their lives and 50 were injured in a stampede during the bathing ritual in the Maha Kumbh Festival on the banks of the Ganges River in the city of Prayagraj in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh yesterday at around 02:30 local time.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement that the incident was extremely saddening and offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Over 400 people lost their lives in a stampede at the same festival, one of the largest Hindu festivals that is repeated every 12 years, in India in 1954.
