US authorities identified 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House. The FBI is treating the incident as a “possible terrorist act.”
Both soldiers, initially reported dead, are now in critical condition. Police say the attacker opened fire during the guardsmen’s patrol before being subdued by other National Guard personnel. Lakanwal entered the US after the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal and had been living in Washington state.
