Fierce clashes between Syrian army units and elements loyal to the ousted Bashar Assad regime have left at least 70 people dead, including 13 security officers and four civilians.
Fighting erupted in the Ceble district of Latakia, where pro-Assad forces launched coordinated attacks on government checkpoints and patrols. Security forces have detained at least 25 individuals, including former intelligence officer Ibrahim Huwayjah, accused of past atrocities.
Authorities have imposed a curfew in Latakia and Tartus and launched a large-scale security operation. Reports indicate additional clashes in Homs and Aleppo.
