Malaysia Bans US Plastic Waste Imports

0

Malaysia has officially banned plastic waste imports from the United States and other non-signatories of the Basel Convention as of July 1, 2025. The ban, part of Malaysia’s broader effort to curb foreign waste, blocks shipments including electronic plastics. Only countries that have ratified the convention may export waste to Malaysia, under strict pre-inspection and high-purity standards via SIRIM Berhad.

The decision has halted plastic waste imports and caused stockpiling at ports. Environmental groups welcomed the move, calling it a major step against deceptive recycling practices. Malaysia has been actively returning illegal shipments since 2019, resisting its use as a global dumping ground.
