Thailand secretly deported 40 Uyghur Turks to China after detaining them for 11 years. The group, arrested in 2014 while fleeing China, was transferred from a detention center in Bangkok to the airport in a tightly controlled operation at 2:00 AM local time. They were flown to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra defended the move, citing international law. The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok claimed the deportees would “live a normal life” in China. However, the Uyghurs had previously requested asylum through the UN, fearing persecution. Beijing denies allegations of human rights abuses against Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
