Thailand Elects Paetongtarn Shinawatra as New Prime Minister

Thailand’s Parliament has elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the ruling party and daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country’s new prime minister. At 37 years old, Paetongtarn becomes Thailand’s youngest prime minister and the 31st to hold the office. She follows in the political footsteps of her father and aunt, both of whom previously served as prime ministers.

Paetongtarn was nominated after the sudden dismissal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by the Thai Constitutional Court. Her election marks the end of a prolonged period of political instability in the country.

In her first statement as prime minister, Paetongtarn expressed her commitment to improving the quality of life for all Thai citizens, stating, “I hope to give people confidence that we can create opportunities, improve their quality of life, and empower all Thai people.”
