The biggest strike of last decade in UK: Half a million British join strike

Half a million people in the UK, including teachers, civil servants, firefighters, bus drivers and machinists, went on strike, demanding a salary increase in the face of inflation and the high cost of living. This strike turned into the biggest in the last 10 years in the country, and it was called the “Wednesday March”. Most schools have closed, and public transportation has come to a standstill. The government has instructed the army to be ready to prevent disruptions in border controls due to the strike. In result of rising food and energy prices, protesters claimed they struggle to pay their bills and requested pay raises that were higher than inflation.

However, the government plans to enact new legislation to prevent strikes in major sectors for the public’s benefit. Opposing the law in question, unions announced that they would organize more protests across the UK to protest the resolution.

Next week, nurses, ambulance staff, paramedics, emergency call workers and other health workers will go on strike in the UK.
