A fire broke out at around 01:00 pm local time in the Geçitköy region of the Girne district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The fire, which broke out in a field area at Geçitköy, spread to the forest area. In addition to the police and fire crews, the Forestry Department, Civil Defense, military personnel and the local residents in the region are responding to the fire with tractors. In the statement made by the TRNC Police General Directorate, it’s announced that the section of the Girne-Guzelyurt main road between Geçitköy and Karşıyaka was closed to traffic in order to facilitate the intervention of heavy smoke and construction equipment due to the fire. Also, it’s reported that 2 firefighting helicopters from Turkey and 1 firefighting helicopter from the United Nations (UN) will be sent to the region for aerial response to the fire.
