Tens of thousands protested in Nepal after the government blocked 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and YouTube. Demonstrators surrounded the parliament in Kathmandu, chanting anti-government slogans and demanding the ban be lifted. Clashes erupted when police used pepper spray, batons, and rubber bullets, leaving 13 people dead. Authorities later imposed a curfew in the capital region.
The government said the platforms were blocked for failing to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, arguing the measure was needed to curb fake news, hate speech, and online fraud. Two platforms that complied with regulations have since been reinstated.
