Thousands Evacuated After Indonesia’s Ruang Volcano Erupts

The Ruang Volcano in Indonesia prompts evacuation for 12,000 people amid ongoing volcanic activities. The volcano, situated on Ruang Island, has recently emitted lava and ash, leading to an evacuation order as a precautionary measure. Last month, Ruang Island was entirely evacuated, relocating 828 residents, and now, with increased volcanic explosions, evacuation extends to nearby islands and Sulawesi province coasts to guard against potential tsunamis.

The Indonesian Volcanology Center reports three recent powerful eruptions, with ash clouds rising to 5,000 meters and spanning 1,000 kilometers. Air travel disruptions ensue, halting operations at 7 regional airports, while volcanic ash drifts towards Malaysia, reminiscent of the 2018 Anak Krakatoa eruption that caused a devastating tsunami.
