The prisoners who were rescued from prisons that were torture centers in Syria, especially Sednaya Prison, following the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, have begun receiving treatment at hospitals.
“My name is Khalid, I got out of prison but I don’t remember it. I don’t remember how I was beaten or how I got here. I’m very sick, my ribs are broken,” said a prisoner.
A doctor working at the hospital expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery to the prisoners receiving treatment and said he hoped all prisoners would be released from prison.
“This is my uncle’s son. He was in Sednaya Prison. My two brothers are still missing,” a prisoner’s relative said.
Another Syrian, who described the torture suffered by thousands of people in prison, said, “There were 50 people in these cells. They were all handcuffed and rotting in these extremely cold dungeons. There was no food or water.”
According to human rights organizations, more than 30,000 prisoners have died in Sednaya prison as a result of mass executions, torture, neglect and starvation. According to United Nations (UN) data, more than 100,000 Syrians have disappeared across the country since 2011. The majority are believed to be held in Sednaya.
