An American tourist was detained by Israeli police after it was reported that he damaged and broke a statue of Jesus in a church in Jerusalem’s Old City.
The incident took place in the Church of the Flagellation, which is located on the Via Dolorosa, a road that is believed to have been walked by Jesus on his way to his crucifixion.
According to Eugenio Alliata, director of the SBF Archaeological Museum, which assembles artifacts from the Holy Land, the wooden statue was brought from Spain to Jerusalem in 1912.
