Italy’s Mount Etna erupted while tourists were visiting, causing panic as visitors fled the site. The eruption occurred on the southeastern side of the volcano, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
Lava and ash did not reach the Valley of the Lions, a common tourist stop near the summit. Flights were redirected to other airports. No casualties or damage were reported.
Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, last erupted significantly in February.
