Trump Announces Expanded Defense and Trade Ties with India

US President Donald Trump announced plans to deepen defense cooperation with India, stating that military sales will increase by billions of dollars and that F-35 fighter jets could be provided. Speaking alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, Trump emphasized the strong ties between the two countries and highlighted agreements on defense, trade, and energy.

Trump also discussed the creation of a new trade route extending from India to Israel, Italy, and the US, including ports, railways, and undersea cables. On trade policies, he stated that the US would demand the same terms as India to ensure fair trade.

Addressing global security, Trump warned that China is rapidly expanding its nuclear capabilities and could soon match the US and Russia. He suggested China could play a role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war and reiterated that if he were president earlier, the conflict would not have started.

Modi confirmed that the US and India aim to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, focusing on artificial intelligence, semiconductors, energy security, and nuclear cooperation.

EU Warns US Tariffs Could Trigger De Facto Trade Ban

0

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic warned that a proposed 30% US tariff on European goods would effectively amount to a trade ban, severely disrupting transatlantic supply chains.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Sefcovic expressed disappointment over a letter from US President Donald Trump that halted expected trade progress. “We were close to an agreement,” he said, but now “must prepare for all outcomes.”

The EU has delayed retaliatory measures on $72 billion worth of US goods until August 1, hoping for a negotiated resolution. Sefcovic emphasized that “no one wants a trade war,” while France urged faster preparation for countermeasures and Hungary blamed the EU Commission’s weak response to US pressure.

Danish and Lithuanian ministers echoed calls to avoid escalation but emphasized EU readiness to defend its interests.
