Trump May Attend Russia-Ukraine Talks in Türkiye

US President Donald Trump said he may attend the Russia-Ukraine peace talks scheduled in Istanbul on May 15 if both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy are present. “I actually plan on flying there. If I think something could happen, there’s a possibility,” he said, praising President Erdoğan as “a very good host.”

At a White House press conference, Trump announced a major move to lower prescription drug prices in the US, promising costs could drop by up to 90%. He said American consumers would no longer subsidize cheaper drug prices abroad, and future pricing would be based on the lowest international rates.

Trump also highlighted recent diplomatic achievements, including brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and reaching a 90-day tariff truce with China. He added that China had agreed to open its markets and reduce trade barriers for US products.

Accusing the EU of unfair treatment, Trump criticized billion-dollar fines on US tech giants and said such practices would no longer be tolerated.

On Iran, Trump noted positive progress in nuclear talks and expressed openness to reviewing sanctions on Syria to support a potential fresh start.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
