Tunisian judges start strike over sacked AMT members

The Association of  Tunisian Judges (AMT) announced that they had decided to start a strikea after Tunisian President Kais Saied dismissed 57 judges. While courtrooms are closed due to the strike that started yesterday, burial permits and urgent terrorism cases will continue. Anas Hamaidi, head of AMT, said in a statement that the strike will continue until the dismissed members are reinstated. Tunisian President Saied ordered that the salaries of the striking judges be cut.

On July 25, last year, President Saied froze the powers of the parliament while dismissing the former prime minister on the grounds that “the country was in danger.” With the decree he signed on September 22, 2021, Said expanded his powers and attached the executive branch to the presidency. Saied finally announced the Supreme Judicial Council’s dissolution in February 2022.
