Tunisia’s water shortage to impact 2023 agricultural production

According to a report issued by the Tunisian Agriculture Ministry, the country is facing a severe water shortage crisis that will have a negative impact on agricultural production and the lives of urban residents in 2023.

According to the report, rainfall during the rainy season beginning in September 2022 totaled 110 million cubic meters, or one-fifth of the normal period. More than 30 reservoirs across the country are low on water, with only 10 to 30 percent of their capacity remaining.

Tunisia, which is located on the Mediterranean Sea’s coast, receives the majority of its precipitation from September to March of the following year.

Tunisia is suffering from a water shortage for the third year in a row. The lack of water will have an impact on the production of most agricultural products in the country, including wheat and olives, experts stated.
