Turkey’s UNESCO listed cave crowded with visitors

Ballıca Cave is drawing the attention of local and foreigner nature lovers spending their summer vacation on Tokat, Turkey.

“The first researches in Ballıca Cave were done by Prof. Dr. Baki Canikli and his team in 1993 and were mapped in 1994. It was opened for world and country tourism in 1995. This cave was designated as a nature park in 2007 and is the 32nd nature park in Turkey. Ballıca Cave entered the UNESCO heritage list in 2019. This cave is unique for the onion stalactites hanging above. The rarely seen karst structures make the place even more special.” said Mehmet Ülkü, a tour guide.

The cave is also popular with its fresh air circulating inside. The fresh air is thought to be good for disorders such as asthma, KOAH and sleeping problems. “The oxygen level here is the same as outside, but the oxygen here is cleaner because bedrock filters it. There is pure oxygen inside the cave,” Mehmet Ülkü said.
