Turkish Chef Barış Demir, who sells Turkish dishes in Japanese capital city of Tokyo, is on his way to becoming a phenomenon thanks to social media. Demir, who performs Maraş Ice Cream show in the Tokyo’s historical and touristic center Asakusa, meets with intense interest from the Japanese. After uploading the video taken by his customers to the social media application Tiktok, Demir has watched by millions of people on the app. Later on, Demir finally opened his own account and started to post the videos he took to the Japanese.

Demir told that everything started about a month ago. “When I came to the shop in the morning, there was a queue of customers. I said, What’s going on? I was surprised,” Demir said. Noting that he didn’t understand what was happening when he saw everyone waiting for ice cream, Demir said, “When I asked why there was a queue, I got the answer, We watched your show on Tiktok.” Demir, stated that he started uploading videos by opening his own account, and that he became famous in the region as the content he shared was watched by millions of people.

Turkish Cuisine Week Celebrated in Indoniesia

A reception was held at the Turkish Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday to mark Turkish Cuisine Week, introducing classic dishes of Türkiye to guests from the diplomatic, business, and arts communities.

The event featured a traditional menu prepared by Ottoman cuisine chef Recep İncecik, including lentil soup, tray pastry, imam bayıldı, kısır, tarator, shepherd’s salad, dry beans, hünkarbeğendi, hakani halva, and baklava.

Turkish Ambassador to Jakarta Talip Küçükcan stated, “This year’s theme focuses on traditional Turkish food culture, which is often overlooked due to modernization and fast food trends. Türkiye wants to highlight its rich culinary heritage.”

Turkish Cuisine Week is celebrated annually from May 21 to 27 under the patronage of First Lady Emine Erdoğan, both in Türkiye and abroad.
