The Justice and Development Party (AKP), the ruling party in Türkiye, held a meeting to announce their members who would be the new candidates in the critical local elections to be held on March 31, 2024. Along with the other mayoral candidates, the new candidate to run for mayor in Istanbul was revealed to be Murat Kurum, former Minister of Environment and Urbanization from July 2018 to June 2023.
Kurum will compete against Ekrem Imamoğlu, the current Istanbul mayor who is a member of the Republican People’s Party.
