Türkiye’s Historic Mesir Macunu Gains EU Geographical Indication

Manisa’s Mesir Macunu (Paste), central to one of Türkiye’s oldest festivals, has become the 28th Turkish product to receive the European Union Geographical Indication (GI), marking international recognition. The application, finalized after three years, will help promote Mesir Paste globally.

According to Ufuk Tanık, President of the Manisa and Mesir Promotion and Tourism Association, the paste, already recognized in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2012, gained Türkiye’s GI status in 2018. Originating from a 41-spice recipe by Merkez Efendi to treat Hafsa Sultan, mother of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, the paste is scattered annually from Manisa’s Sultan Mosque, a tradition believed to bring healing.
