The statue, depicting her waving during Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, was cut off at the ankles. Police launched an investigation after a tip-off on May 13.
An earlier wooden version of the statue was destroyed by arson in 2020. The current bronze replica, built by US artist Brad Downey, replaced it on a concrete base. Despite her local fame, Melania has never returned to her hometown since leaving Slovenia in the 1990s to pursue a modeling career in the US.
