People have been protesting against fuel prices and the cost of living in the Central American country of Panama for over two weeks. Teachers’ Union, including student groups, workers and doctors demand a solution for the soaring living costs in the country. Protests have become violent in Santiago de Veraguas, where demonstrators set fire to a police vehicle. They blocked main corridors of the capital Panama City, demanding the freezing of fuel prices and the reduction of food and medicine costs.
Government’s effort of lowering the price of fuel and certain essential goods did not satisfy the protesters as the demonstrations have been ongoing since January across the country.
