US observes first anniversary of capitol insurrection

The United States Capitol is preparing to observe the first anniversary of the 06 January 2021 insurgency, after insurgents attacked the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden’s certification as President of the United States.

The congress raid, where 5 people were killed, organized by supporters of former President Donald Trump in the USA was recorded as an attack on US democracy. The investigation into the incident went down in history as one of the FBI’s largest and most complex investigations. At least 725 people have been charged with connection to the incident, according to US Department of Justice data. About 165 of them pleaded guilty, while at least 70 of them were sentenced to prison.

According to a survey by research firm NPR/Ipsos, 64 percent of US citizens said that American democracy is in crisis and at risk. According to the research, 32 percent of Americans believe that the congressional crackdown is a coup attempt or an uprising, while 28 percent think that the events are an uncontrollable turmoil. 17 percent of the Americans stated that the incidents could be a conspiracy and stated that they were carried out by opponents of Donald Trump, including the Antifa organization and government agents.

Palestinians celebrated the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas after indirect talks in Egypt, marking the first step of a broader peace plan involving hostage exchanges and Israeli troop withdrawals. Crowds, including children displaced by Israeli attacks, gathered around Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital to celebrate the end of the fighting. Residents in Maghazi Refugee Camp expressed hopes for rebuilding Gaza and establishing a Palestinian state. “Thank God, the war is over. Our homes were destroyed, and our children killed. We thank everyone who helped end this war,” said Yasser Abu Hein. Others shared optimism that Gaza would “return better than before.”

Israel confirmed that the ceasefire would begin following a cabinet vote later in the day.
