US scientist Mark Dickey’s treatment continues in Türkiye

American scientist Mark Dickey, who had been trapped in Morca Cave in Mersin’s Anamur district due to stomach bleeding, was successfully rescued after a challenging 9-day operation. He is currently receiving treatment at Mersin City Hospital, where his health is improving. Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan visited Dickey to check on his condition and commended the extensive rescue efforts involving 200 personnel from 8 countries.

Dickey and a group of 15 scientists had descended to the cave on September 3 for exploration, and when he developed stomach bleeding at a depth of 1,276 meters, a rescue operation was initiated. Medication and blood transfusion at a depth of approximately 1,040 meters improved Dickey’s condition. On September 12, a meticulous evacuation process successfully brought him to the surface, and he was subsequently transported to Mersin City Hospital by helicopter for further treatment. Governor Pehlivan praised the collaborative efforts of various institutions and thanked them for their support in this complex rescue operation, which is considered one of the most challenging in the world, given the cave’s depth.
