According to NYU Langone Health, an academic medical center in New York, USA, the first whole eye transplant was performed on a human after a 21-hour surgery. Although the transplanted eye is currently unable to communicate with the brain, it has well-functioning blood vessels and a promising-looking retina, said the surgical team that performed the surgery.
Stating that he was informed that the transplanted eye could not be functional, Aaron James, the patient who had the surgery, said he would be happy to be a part of the attempt, which can allow other patients to see in the future.
