Due to severe icing, 2 tram cars malfunctioned on the Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque, New Mexico (NM) state of US at New Year’s Eve. At the incident, 21 people were trapped in tram cars. After incident reported, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and air rescue teams dispatched on the scene to carry out the rescue efforts. Sandia Peak Tramway general manager Michael Donovan stated that trapped people included employees from the tram, as well as the restaurant at the peak. Donovan told that the health conditions of the trapped people were good.
After teams dispatched, Bernalillo County Fire Department (BCFD) released a statement about the progress on the rescue efforts. “After a coordinated effort between BCFD, BCSO, NM State Police, and NM Search & Rescue Teams, we are happy to report that the 20 people have been rescued from Gondola 2. Gondola 1 still has one employee and we are actively working are rescue plan,” BCFD said in the statement. “We are happy to report that at this time all people needing rescue from the Tram cars have been rescued and are safely at base,” BCFD said.
