211 kg Bluefin Tuna sold for 16.88 million Yen at New Year’s auction in Tokyo

The New Year’s fish auction, which is traditionally held every New Year in Japan, was held this year at Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. Started with the crack of dawn, dozens of Tuna fish were put up for sale at the auction. As was the case last year, a 211 kg Bluefin Tuna caught by fishermen operating in the Aomori Prefecture received the highest bid, in the auction. The giant Tuna sold to restaurant operator and a wholesaler for 16.88 million Yen (about 145.000 Dollars).

On the other hand, a 208 kg Bluefin Tuna was sold for 20.84 million Yen in 2021. The fact that the prices determined in recent years were lower than in previous years was interpreted as the effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the restaurant industry.
